Andrew Cash on the Sam The Record Man sign:

October 4th, 2013

“Music, especially in its popular forms, has played a key role in turning Toronto into one of the world’s leading arts and culture capitols. As we look to reshape our economy for the 21st century, creative industries will be a leading force. That would not be possible without the great pioneering work done by artists as well as arts and culture entrepreneurs of the past.

One such pioneer was Sam ‘the Record Man’ Sniderman whose neon sign hung atop his record store on Yonge Street for 40 years. During this time the massive dual spinning discs became a key iconic symbol of Toronto. To this day it embodies those decades of culture pioneering in Canada’s largest city. It would be a huge loss to our city and our culture heritage if the sign is not remounted as an important landmark.

I have great respect for the team at Ryerson University under the leadership of Sheldon Levy and I join with the many community members who are calling for the university to honour its commitment and re-erect this important heritage artifact.”
