2014 Luminato Festival Schedule Announced: Daniel Lanois, Rufus Wainright, The Roots, David Byrne, TV On The Radio and more
April 8th, 2014
The full schedule for the 2014 Luminato Festival has been revealed, taking place June 6-15 in Downtown Toronto. Centered around the Festival Hub at David Pecaut Square, which will be converted into Cardboard Beach by two-man Cuban collective Los Carpinteros, Luminato invites the world to join Toronto in celebrating creativity with over a week of free and paid events.
On June 10, Luminato Festival is excited to present the world premiere of SLEEPING IN THE DEVIL’S BED: THE MUSIC OF DANIEL LANOIS at Massey Hall. Produced by Hal Willner, the all-star tribute to Lanois’ music legacy will feature collaboration performances from Emmylou Harris, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Anna McGarrigle, Martha Wainwright, Bill Frisell, Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) and The Handsome Family. Lanois and Wilner will also take part in the TimeTalks series two days prior on June 8 at MaRS Discovery District.
Also premiering at the festival for one night only on June 14 at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts is IF I LOVED YOU: Gentlemen Prefer Broadway – An Evening Of Love Duets, conceived by composer, singer and songwriter Rufus Wainwright. The evening will showcase Wainwright and an international spectrum of pop, classical and musical theatre stars, including David Byrne, Boy George, Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), Josh Groban, counter tenor Brennan Hall (River of Fundament), Glen Hansard (The Swell Season, The Frames), Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies) and Andrew Rannells (Book of Mormon, HBO’s GIRLS).
Musical performances at The Hub this year include free concerts from The Hidden Cameras, Jesse Cook, Amanda Martinez, New Orleans’ The Soul Rebels, Buffy Sainte-Marie and many more. This year will also see the introduction of the SPECIAL WEEKEND CONCERT EDITION, a paid series featuring concerts from The Roots, TV On The Radio and Ziggy Marley: The Fly Rasta Tour.
We are certainly excited for Sunday June 8’s unique (and free) event SYNCHRONIZED: A Live Re-Score of Down by Law (1986), a film by Jim Jarmusch. Presented by Thomas Golubić (music supervisor for Breaking Bad) with performances by saxophonist Colin Stetson (Arcade Fire, Bon Iver), SYNCHRONIZE approaches classic films as living experiences, ripe for a fresh creative spin, new insight and a deeper appreciation.. First, Golubić will open the night with an audio/video DJ set featuring classic popular and art films from different eras synchronized to contemporary music, like mad scientists set to the Pixies, monster movies with Diana Ross and Sesame Street alongside old school funk.
Attendees will also have the chance to catch with several “late night” shows, as Jason Collett’s Basement Revue will occur nightly at the Edward Day Gallery and TSO Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 taking place 10 PM Saturday June 14 at Roy Thompson Hall.
